Mestre Sala

[English] João Bosco and Aldir Blanc represent one of the most fertile partnership of Brazilian popular music, among the diversas compositions the samba O Mestre Sala dos Mares has a special place in the popular storied, beyond the simplicity and melodic sidewalk beauty in a rich poetry, characters and stories are mixed. Assembled by the blog, it's presented as an album collection of one song only, an unusual proposal but which produces an interesting effect to hear different interpretations of the same theme. Those who are interested, possibly the comparation and election of the best is inevitable, but more that elects the most beautiful the proposal is allows observing the diversity and as a song can be felt and interpreted by different musicians.

Just as the character, the samba O Mestre Sala dos Mares, is a symbol of Brazilian music by the struggles, resistances and freedom, it was a fitting tribute to the heroic figure of João Cândido composed between 1973-74, during the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985) and recorded by Elis Regina in 1974 and later on the album Caça a Rapousa by João Bosco in 1975. Period of major restrictions of expression, this song until be performed by Elis Regina and João Bosco suffered several cuts and adjustments in poetry by the Censorship Division. Aldir Blanc had to systematically go to the department and negotiate poetry and has problems with inappropriate words and make the appropriate changes, as shown below. During this militar period, the original version was sung only in international tours, such as the celebrated presentation of Elis Regina in Mexico in 1981 presented the unpublished and free version (Link of the show) where "black Admiral" is sung instead of "black navigator" and others changes.

A história por trás do samba / The story behind the samba

A história:

João Cândido Felisberto was born on June 24, 1880, in the Province (now State) of Rio Grande do Sul, in Coxilha Bonita farm that was in the Dom Feliciano village in the municipality of Encruzilhada do Sul. Early yet, to 11 years João Cândido He was a soldier of General Pinheiro Machado, the Federalist Revolution in 1893 (according to the testimony of John himself Cândido the News Gazette in 1912). In 1895, at age 13, she was accepted into the military company of Porto Alegre, but soon, in December of that year went to the Navy of Brazil, in the then capital city of Rio de Janeiro.
João Cândido in his later years

The story:

Emerged with the independence of Brazil and located in Rio de Janeiro, the Navy of Brazil, or the National Navy as it was called during the monarchy, had its birth and long period of its history linked to Portuguese organizations and doctrines. Even with major changes in Brazil's scenario as the abolition of slavery in 1888 and the Republic Proclamation in 1889 the Navy of Brazil for long periods in its history preserved kept principles and practices extremely archaic of order and discipline within the institution. A serious problem that the Navy faced in Brazil was with the recruitment was very difficult due to the very low degree of personal instruction for the posts of both officers and sailors. The Navy to recruit technical created vocational schools, however, it formed an insufficient number of these technicians mainly due to the high level of requirements regarding the preparation of the Brazilian student in this time. As a result, the Navy had a huge lack of technical and let alone minimally prepared sailors. As has always been, throughout its history, Brazil hadEmerged with the independence of Brazil and headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, the Navy of Brazil, or the National Navy as it was called during the monarchy, had its birth and long period of its history linked organizations and Portuguese doctrines. Even with major changes in Brazil's scenario as the abolition of slavery in 1888 and the Republic Proclamation in 1889 the Navy of Brazil for long periods in its history preserved principles and kept extremely archaic practices of order and discipline within the institution. A serious problem that the Navy faced in Brazil was with the recruitment was very difficult due to the very low degree of personal instruction for the posts of both officers and sailors. The Navy created to recruit technical vocational schools, however, it formed an insufficient number of these technicians mainly due to the high level of requirements regarding the preparation of the Brazilian student. As a result, the Navy had a huge lack of technical and let alone minimally prepared sailors. As has always been, throughout its history, Brazil had an immense range of population economically disadvantaged and problems with absence of employment. The enlistment in the Navy of Brazil and the military in general was indeed considered a secure form of money for a significant population group that be aims better positions. As the Brazilian population in the most deprived social groups had a huge contingent of mixed colors, blacks, natives, and a relatively insignificant amount of whites, this was the Brazilian's composition was entering the Navy.

Certain customs and practices of maintaining order and discipline remained the same for many years, there were various forms of punishment in the Navy, from the tortures of the most varied, and whip until the hangings. One day after the proclamation of the Republic on November 16, 1889, the Minister of Navy Admiral Edward Wandenkolk decided to terminate corporal punishment, however, six months after official charged new discipline laws on board and the minister decided to getting back physical punishment. The undisciplined sailor could have lashes, reduced salary, be demoted, be arrested and humiliated as the decree that created the Correctional Company, responsible for determining the nature of the punishment.

A fact recorded was the case in 1893 when a contingent of sailors had revolted in the ship Marajó against excessive physical punishment, demanding the change of the commander who abused the whip and other tortures. At the time would not yet the end of the whip, but just changing the master of the ship to prevent abuse. Definitely was not normal receive lashes. And to make matters worse, the officers went beyond the limit of own regiment of the Navy, based on a decree which was never published in the Official Gazette, which established the creation of Correctional Airlines could indicate the punishment of up to 25 lashes, even after the abolition of slavery.

With the turn of the century and technological improvements, the ships also received significant modernizations, and a key was emerging of modern steamships. In the first decade of the twentieth century the Rio de Janeiro modernized quickly, Mayor Pereira Passos made changes the physical appearance of the city that had joined the Belle Époque, the French fashion. Following the upgrades, the Navy of Brazil acquired fourteen ships among the most modern at the time, ordering battleships and the latest torpedo turbine ships and cruisers. According to the Navy the technical level of Brazilian sailors accustomed to sailing ships did not follow the modernization, however same registers cite the sailors of 1910 as trained professionals, competent men who participated in the construction of ships, which maneuvered with extreme efficiency, modern men living under an archaic system.

From 1908 to understand the steps of the construction of warships ordered by the Brazilian government, hundreds of sailors were sent to England. In 1909 João Cândido was also sent there. This stay in England it was informed of the movement carried out by Russian sailors in 1905, demanding better working conditions and food, the revolt of the Battleship Potemkin. Even in Britain, and then, upon returning to Brazil, the mariners who were there to accompany the construction of battleships Minas Gerais and São Paulo, and Bahia cruiser, started a conspiratorial movement in order to make a more effective attitude towards to end the whip in the Navy of Brazil.

published in newspapers of the time
On November 22, 1910 one week after take the new government of Hermes da Fonseca President, about two thousand mariners rebelled and took four warships in Guanabara Bay. Six days pointed eighty guns and threatened to bomb the city which at the time had a population of 870,000 people. The riot had as a commander and main spokesman the sailor João Cândido Felisberto 30 years old. It was the revolt of the lash triggered, and the main reason for this revolt, the corporal punishment in the Navy.

The motivation was the scourge suffered by the sailor Marcelino Menezes on the battleship Minas Gerais, one of the most modern ships in the world at the time. After a serious act of indiscipline, said to have been punished with 250 lashes. This number of lashes widespread reside doubts, especially when designing if someone would support that number of punishments, and is described that Marcelino had suffered silent. Anyway, there was a case of indiscipline and the officer who was in charge of the disciplinary matter on the ship established a absurd amount of lashes. The reason that led Marcelino punishment was that when he entered the ship with two bottles of cachaça, the cable service sailor gave part. Marcelino as revenge had cuted with blade the whole body of the Cape, according to reports. At that time, the penal code did not work, at least in the military, had delays and abuse in the Navy's system of punishment. Cannon shots were fired to threaten but unfortunately they hit the city and killed two children. In fact it is believed that they would never have the courage to bomb the fact Rio, but the government did not want to put the test. After six days of great tension in the city and residents for fear of being bombed by the rebels, the government Hermes da Fonseca and Congress gave, João Cândido and the other sailors were amnestied. The movement of the victory can not be celebrated, after the revolt the government set up a rematch of weather, and practice revoked the amnesty. Even before any action legal revocation, the sailors were dismissed en masse, producing a lot of unemployed and yet when the sailors were landing on earth, most of them were captured and arrested, taken to the prison of the naval battalion on the island of snakes.

The palce of the prision at Ilha das Cobras naval
battalion
In this prison only João Cândido and other sailor survived, the jailers were non-commissioned officers of the naval battalion, and a single recorded account of one of them tells of the "murder" of the sailors and soldiers of the naval battalion who were in prison. It was an inlaid building on the rock in one of the hill slope, unventilated place, many came to die poisoned or suffocated and do not know for sure for what or by whom.

The Revolt of the Lash was a legitimate revolt against an absurd and inhumane practice of corporal punishment, a paradox to own then current constitutional regime. It was an unlawful and was a manifestation of the citizen against this lawlessness, the Revolt of the Lash frontally demanded the revocation of the decree and the end of corporal punishment in the Navy, this was a definitive victory over injustice.

The hero, the myth:

The Revolt of the Lash is not seen by way of unanimous segments of society, there is for example a chain of marine trying to disqualify João Cândido, but without success. After the incidents João Cândido never left Rio de Janeiro, where he lived the glories of "Admiral", the humiliation of a marginal and until his death in 1969 as a fish vendor at the docks. Today there are numerous tributes to João Cândido, as well as the composers of this beautiful song The Living Master and Commander. The time civil society in general is showing as Admiral Black is considered a national hero and walks to a big myth.
